Well Lance and I competed in our first dock dog event for 2009 and man did we have some tough competition. To qualify for big air pro finals jumps had to be big there were 2 dogs who hit 27 plus jumps to qualify another 3 who hit 25 plus. Lance who jumped in 9 waves all weekend was handled on Friday and Sunday by a junior handler named sarah simmon who recently lost her dog to lymphoma her Jack Russell was a 20 ft plus jumper. Sarah asked if she could try to qualify for nationals with lance and I said sure as long as I could play some too! Any how lance and sarah got 2---23ft jumps and a 23ft 7 also many 21 and 22 ft jumps. For me on Saturday lance stepped it up and gave it his all and hit 3 24ft jumps a 24’10” jump a 24’9” and 24’1” we also entered him in EV which is like a high jump for dogs. Lance started to get the bumper at 5’4” high and won EV cadets with a 6’4” high jump he tried for 6’8 jump and barley missed it. He did a great job on Sunday and made 2 finals one with sarah the junior finals and one with me in the pro finals.
In junior finals lance hit a 22’2 jump and a 22’4 jump to win 1st place with sarah! I was so proud of both of them sarah is a fun kid and really enjoys the sport!
In pro finals we were seated in 6th place to start out we had 2 jumps to try for placement in the top 4 lances first jump was a 23’4 jump which was good but I knew I had some big jumpers coming up. My friend pam who has a Belgium malinois dart hit a 27’7”jump wow was that ever so cool to see!!!! The other dogs were coming up with 25 and 24 ft jumps lance was sitting in 5th place as we hit the dock for our 2nd jump and he pulled out a 24’1” jump to bump us up to 4th place!!! Where we sweated until the last dog to jump went….and that 1” save us and gave us 4th place…I was so so proud of my little man. He did a great job.
We had a great weekend weather was cool so was the water so we have to thank our sponsor for the great coats that kept lance warm all weekend www.d-fa.com
